Just because one doesn't talk about it doesn't mean it does not exist. Right from dadi's tales about 'the princess as white as snow' to completely outrageous advertisements of 'how fairness equates with success in life' endorsed by leading celebrities of the country 'fairness' of skin is equated with something to be desired while the dusky texture to be scorned upon.
The result : A want for people with only ‘fair’ skin either when it comes to jobs or marriage and an inherent inferiority complex among others.
Brown n’ Proud is not an NGO. Its not a television show on social issues. Its aim is not social upliftment of some particular group or just to capture the limelight for limelight’s sake.
Brown n’ Proud is a movement. A campaign. A desire to change people’s perception towards other’s skin and their own. An intent to get rid of the inferiority complex based on the colour of skin tone. A goal to achieve Martin Luther King, Jr.’s dream in our society ‘that one day brides/grooms wont be searched for on the basis of their skin tone, but on basis of their character. That one day, on facebook one wouldn’t need to lighten his profile picture in order to get more likes and friend requests. That one day, I wouldn’t need to be fair to be lovely.’ Thats what Brown n’ Proud is. Join us NOT because you are brown or dusky. Join us because you feel along the same lines..
